Keeping Your Teeth Healthy

Keeping your teeth healthy can be as simple as following a few simple tips. However, even the easiest tips can go by the way side every once and a while causing bacteria and acid in the mouth to run rampant and cause cavities. The best way to keep your teeth healthy is by following the basic principles of brushing and flossing. Most people weren’t taught proper techniques on how to care for their teeth. By lacking this basic knowledge you can be doing a disservice to the health of your teeth. Follow these basic guidelines to proper care for your teeth and you will be smiling wider from this day forward.

1. Throw away your toothbrush- Toothbrushes, believe or not are a breeding ground for bacteria. Even though you rinse your toothbrush after you use it small amounts that aren’t even discernable to the eye may be left to flourish. Or bacteria from the surrounding counter or sink can come into contact with your toothbrush as certain points in time. Additionally, after using your toothbrush for 12 weeks in a row the stiffness of the bristles begin to wear down. Therefore you aren’t getting the same pressure to remove plaque and bacteria from your teeth, as you were when you first bought your toothbrush. Therefore, it’s best to recycle your toothbrush every 3-4 months. This way you continue to get a clean, strong tooth brushing experience.

2. Visit your dentist at least twice a year- Dentists are the most knowledgeable people in regards to your teeth. Although, most people hate going to the dentist, it can actually be a great learning experience. Even though the dentist is there to tell you if you have been treating your teeth badly, they can also encourage you to have healthier, whiter teeth as well. Dentists can teach you how to more effectively brush and floss without making it a difficult process. Therefore go for a checkup at least twice a year and don’t hesitate to ask your dentist the really hard questions either!

3. Electronic toothbrushes- Much like many of our other gadgets, even toothbrushes have gotten an upgrade to electronic versions. In actuality, electronic toothbrushes are better than the regular manual toothbrushes. The reason- not everyone brushes with the same intensity. Some people brush too hard and some brush too soft. In the case of brush too hard, you can actually brush the enamel right off the top layer of your teeth. If you brush too soft you risk leaving bacteria and plague on your teeth, which can eat away at the enamel and cause cavities. With an electronic toothbrush it moves on its own so you don’t need to apply any extra pressure, just let the bristles move on their own. This ensures that you are getting all the bacteria off of your teeth, leaving you with a happy, healthy smile.

4. Flossing- Flossing is one of those things that everyone should do, but only a small percentage of the population actually does it. With the new flossing aids in the market now a days it makes flossing much easier. The old flossing methods made it hard to reach to the very back teeth. Floss picks can reach far in the back of the mouth and behind teeth. Make sure to properly floss by gently getting in between each tooth, going around each tooth and reaching behind the teeth.

5. Stop snacking and chew on gum- Snacking causes sugar to sit on your teeth. Bacteria in the mouth come to the teeth to feed on the sugar, which creates acid that causes tooth decay. By chewing gum, you stimulate saliva production. Saliva flushes food and bacteria off of the surface of the teeth. It is preferable to chew sugarless gum or gum containing xylitol, a sugar alcohol. Rather than attract bacteria, xylitol fights it making a good ingredient for gum chewers.

6. Toothbrush to go- With the advent of new flossing aids and electronic toothbrushes, there is also a new way to bring a toothbrush with you where ever you go. New mini on the go toothbrushes are the size of a tube of lipstick, easily storable in your purse and are a toothbrush, toothpick and breath freshener all in one. These disposable toothbrushes are great for after lunch, coffee or just as a breath freshener during the day.

7. Drink more water- Water is one of the consistent ways to continually keep bacteria and germs from resting on your teeth. Water flushes left over food particles and bacteria out of your mouth. Not to mention that water neutralizes the pH balance in the mouth making it less likely for acid to form. This means less cavities and a healthier smile.

Healthy Teeth and Gums Contribute to a Long and Healthy Life

Our mouths are the doorway to our cells. What we put through that doorway and how we take care of that doorway can affect our health big time. Healthy teeth and gums are anti-aging!

I am married to a dentist, so I know first-hand just how important it is to go for a regular check-up. However, I also know that many people do put it off. It does continually surprise me that I can see a woman who has taken the time and care to have beautiful hair, clothes and make-up and then spoils that picture with an ugly, un-cared for mouth. A smile is the most amazing thing that we can bestow, so why not make it a younger looking beautiful one?

There are many ways in which poor oral health compromises the human body. The two main ones are gum (periodontal) disease and tooth decay. These infections can occur separately or together. Gum disease and tooth decay are caused by poor oral hygiene (dentists recommend brushing teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once a day) combined with “bad” micro-organisms. These live in dental plaque on the teeth above and below the gum line (hence the advice to brush and the floss!).

Of the two, gum disease (especially advanced-form periodontitis) is much more harmful to overall health than tooth decay. Gum disease is a painless disease which, if left untreated, will persist for many years with possible dire consequences.

Recent findings have shown untreated periodontal (gum) disease:

* Contributes to respiratory disease - the oral cavity can act as a reservoir for respiratory pathogens. These pathogens have been found in plaque in deep periodontal pockets.

* Increases the risk of heart attack by 25% - people with advanced periodontitis had a 25% increased risk of coronary heart disease

* Increases the risk of stroke by a factor of ten - toxins from bacteria can be associated with chronic infections associated with strokes

* Increase severity of diabetes - it has been long known diabetes affects periodontal health, it has now been shown the reverse is also true; periodontal disease can affect diabetes. Severe periodontal disease can increase the risk of poor glycemic control. Within diabetics, it has shown those with good oral hygiene are less likely to suffer stroke, transient ischemic attack and angina or myocardial infarct.

* Reduces life expectancy

* Lowers resistance to other infections

* Contributes to low pre-term birth weights - studies have suggested 18% or all pre-term low birth weight cases may be attributable to periodontal disease.

* Severely stresses the immune system - the more serious the infection, the longer it lasts and the more the immune system is affected. The immune system can be so compromised its ability to fight infection and other degenerative diseases like cancer are seriously diminished.
If your gums bleed when brushing then that is not healthy. Make sure you have a friendly dentist taking care of your health.

Bacteria are the main culprits in dental decay and it is now thought that some viruses are also involved in the disease process. These micro-organisms produce acids and toxins causing inflammation in the gums and thus in the body’s circulation system, exposing the body to virulent strains of numerous bacteria.

Poor diet, smoking, vitamin deficiency (Vitamin D deficiency is a known factor in gum disease) and toxic substances such as mercury can further compound dental disease.

Dental infections, especially long term periodontal disease and infected tooth roots can have a negative effect on the immune system to such an extent it jeopardises medical treatment.

Regular check-ups every 6 to 12 months ensure that the painless oral health diseases are picked up before they become painful and serious.

Gum disease and tooth decay can be treated using microdentistry - dental water lasers and air abrasion. Dental decay can be prevented.

Find a dentist who is passionate about his patient’s dental health and is using the latest technology to make the patient’s experience as comfortable as possible. And make sure that dentist does not place mercury amalgam fillings - after all mercury is one of the most toxic things that we can be exposed to.

Healthy Teeth - 5 Tips On How To Keep Your Teeth Healthy And Strong

You need to eat right to be well and fit. To eat right means chewing your food completely so that proper digestion takes place. You are able to chew your food and enjoy it only when you have a complete set of healthy and strong teeth. These 5 tips on how to keep your teeth healthy will make your life easy, enjoyable, and stress-free:

1. Brushing at least twice a day is the most basic but considered the most important dental care. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the very first lessons you learn as a child. The right toothbrush matters - those bristles should be round-ended and soft enough to remove plaque and food particles without damaging the enamel or the gums. The size should be just right to reach all corners of the mouth including the back part of the teeth. You should replace your toothbrush when the bristles begin to wear, or ideally every 3 months.

2. Regularly use dental floss. Even with regular brushing, there will always be areas where food debris can’t be removed. Wrap the floss around your fingers and wave it up and down between each tooth. Some people floss first before brushing but it really doesn’t matter what’s done first. After brushing and flossing, rinse your mouth, swishing it around in your mouth, and spit it out after one minute.

3. Watch what you eat. The types of food and beverages that you consume and your over-all eating habits have an effect to your oral and gum condition. Consumption of a well-balanced diet with emphasis on fruits and vegetables is an excellent choice. Dental plaque thrives on sugar. The contact of bacteria and sugar creates acids that destroy tooth enamel. Caffeine-rich beverages can discolor your teeth, however you may use a straw to avoid most of the sugar and stain that could make your teeth and gums sick.

4. Keep your gums healthy. You should check for signs of cavities or gum disease if you notice some color change of your gums. Gum tissue is normally soft and pinkish. If it becomes reddish, it could be a symptom of Gingivitis, a disease causing the gums to become sore and swollen. You must also be careful not to damage or irritate your gums when brushing and flossing. At the first sign of gum disease, go to your dentist immediately.

5. Have a regular appointment with a qualified dentist. Your dentist can give you further specific advice on how to keep your teeth healthy so you may have a confident smile at all times.

A smile is what keeps a day bright. But how can you smile when you don’t have healthy teeth to show? Keeping your teeth healthy requires you to have discipline and the right attitude. Prevention is always better than cure, and it can save you a lot of time, money, energy and stress.

Curing Bad Breath in 3 Days

As most of us have experienced, bad breath is both annoying and disturbing for both you and the people you interact with. Let’s just take a look at some of the situations in which bad breath can spell disaster:

- Job interviews
- Business meetings
- Social interaction at work
- Dating
- Any first impression

Bad breath is not just annoying and inconvenient. It can prevent you from getting a job, it can ruin your date and people will always keep their distance to you in social situations. See the problem? Of course, there are cures out there: chewing gum, mouth wash and even alcohol. However, these «cures» only work in the short term and doesn’t deal with the cause of the problem. I’ll get back to this later in this article.

Let’s first take a look at what’s causing bad breath: bacteria. The average human mouth is literally infested with bacteria: some are good for your breath, but some can cause havoc to it. These bacteria can be divided into two categories: the aerobic bacteria and the anaerobic bacteria.

The aerobic bacteria are good for your overall health and thrive in oxygen-rich environments, while the anaerobic bacteria thrive in oxygen-poor environments. Studies have shown that anaerobic bacteria are the bad guys behind almost 90 % of all bad breath problems.

The reason is quite simple. These bacteria produce waste products in your mouth known as sulfur compounds. It’s these compounds that produce that foul odor known as bad breath or halitosis, as a dentist would call it.

Most of the bad breath remedies on the market today are designed to kill these anaerobic bacteria, using chemicals like:

- Oxychlorine
- Chlorine dioxide
- Zinc compounds
- Alcohol and other similar antiseptics

However, while killing off the anaerobic bacteria in your mouth, these chemicals also tend to cause dehydration in your mouth. Saliva is the body’s natural defense against the very same bacteria because it is oxygen-rich and therefore makes the going tough for the bad breath bacteria. When your mouth is dehydrated by these chemicals, it can actually make the problem worse in the long term! If you really want to get rid of halitosis, you will need to control the anaerobic bacteria without dehydrating the mouth and robbing it of saliva. Ironically, this rules out most of today’s remedies against bad breath.

One of the most effective, quickest and cheapest methods for curing bad breath is to make your very own mouth wash using natural ingredients that kill off those anaerobic bacteria. Making a month’s supply of this doesn’t have to cost more than a dollar or two!

Another great method to get rid off those foul bacteria is to «starve» them. What I’m talking about? Those «bad breath bacteria» are feeding off small food particles in your mouth that are left behind after eating. Therefore, brushing and rinsing your teeth after every meal or snack, you will starve those little devils!

Last, but not least: changing your diet can also help fight those bacteria permanently. Caffeine, alcohol and food/drinks made with synthetic ingredients are all bad for your breath because they can lead to dehydration. Besides, coffee breath doesn’t smell too good to start with.

Curing bad breath isn’t just another urban legend. You can end the problem with halitosis without spending a fortune or waiting for weeks for the results to come. It’s all about doing it the natural way.

If you’re interested in curing bad breath permanently, I strongly recommend this website on curing bad breath. It doesn’t take a fortune and it doesn’t take weeks - it can be done within 3 days!
